Bad Habits to Avoid with Dental Implants

As the only method of tooth replacement to mimic both the root and the crown, a dental implant provides unmatched benefits. With over a 95% success rate, your new teeth can last for 30 years or more. However, many factors affect their lifespan. You can ensure your dental implants thrive for decades by avoiding 6 bad habits that can shorten their life expectancy.

1. Not Brushing Before Bed

Dental implants can’t get cavities, but that doesn’t mean you can let your oral hygiene routine slip. Plaque affects both natural teeth and dental prosthetics. It harbors bacteria that can cause dental implant failure. Brushing once a day isn’t enough. You must brush your teeth for 2 full minutes at least twice daily, if not after every meal, to remove plaque and harmful bacteria.

2. Skipping Daily Flossing

A leading cause of dental implant failure is an infection called peri-implantitis. It’s like gum disease, which destroys the structures supporting your dental implants. Daily flossing is the best way to keep your gums healthy.

3. Smoking and Drinking Alcohol

Smoking and alcohol aren’t just bad for your health. They affect your body’s immune system, which makes you more prone to infections. A compromised immune system won’t fight infections adequately. You can experience delayed healing and other complications. It’s better to kick the habits to ensure your new smile lasts for decades.

4. Eating Hard or Chewy Foods

Dental implants are anchored in your jawbone, restoring 70% of your natural biting force. You can eat anything, but it’s not always a good idea. Hard and chewy foods put additional wear and tear on your restoration, which may shorten its life expectancy. Moderation is essential for getting the most from your new smile.

5. Grinding and Clenching Your Teeth

Grinding and clenching your teeth can lead to dental implant failure from pressure and friction. Ask your dentist for a nightguard to create a protective barrier between your upper and lower arches.

6. Delaying Dental Checkups

Besides keeping your mouth clean at home, regular dental care is just as important. Delaying semi-annual cleanings and checkups can allow dental issues to go undetected until it’s too late, like gum inflammation. Commit to visiting your dentist every 6 months.

If you notice any signs of dental implant failure between your regular appointments, like red, swollen, or bleeding gums, contact your dentist right away. The sooner you receive treatment, the better the odds of preventing implant failure.
